Navigating Health & Wellness in the Sandwich Generation

Caregiver Support
For those of us juggling work, family, and caring for aging parents, it often feels like there’s little time left for ourselves. As someone who’s been there—working overtime as a single mom—I know just how easy it is to put our own health on the back burner.

Recently, I finally took some time to focus on my health. As a doctor, I knew I needed to be screened for osteoporosis, especially as I approach my mid-60s. Even though I felt it was a bit early, I decided to take the proactive step of getting a DEXA scan. To my surprise, I discovered I had advanced osteoporosis.

I’ve always eaten well and exercised regularly, so this news was a shock! But it reminded me how important it is for those of us over 50 to stay vigilant about our health. That’s why I’m passionate about building a community where we can share resources and discuss the unique challenges we face—whether they’re medical, social, financial, or related to overall well-being.

As the Baby Boomer generation reaches the 80-year milestone, the risk of chronic illnesses, particularly dementia, rises significantly, affecting over 40% of elders. Yet, finding healthcare professionals who specialize in senior care can be difficult.

Whether you’re looking for a knowledgeable physician, a seasoned geriatric care manager, or a geriatric nurse specialist, we need a supportive network for guidance. Together, we can navigate these years with confidence and connect with others who understand the journey of aging well.

“Dad is acting strange, but the doctor says his cognitive test, the MOCA test is 26/30 is normal… now what? What does that even mean?”

DLG COMMUNITY

A Place for Connection and Support

Welcome to DLG Community. A place for families, caregivers and eldercare professionals to address the needs and challenges they see in their daily lives.

“He has not been acting normal since his medications were changed. Is that a medication reaction?”

“He is giving $100s to the new caregiver, on top of her salary. I have been told he has the “right to folly, but he does not have savings to spare. Help.”

We provide a moderated conversation space for families/caregivers or eldercare professionals (but anyone can join) to address topics that don’t get addressed locally.

DLG EDUCATION

Practical Training for Handling Elders and Dementia

Dementia training is required for many eldercare professions. I’ve had to do it. But how helpful is it really. One popular program had a course on falls that spent most of the module on reviewing falls scales. At DLG, we work to give you front line information to apply today.

Understanding the challenges that people with dementia face, will help you understand what you need to do to help them, that you don’t have to do for others. We will take it step by step and continue to develop modules that tackle, the over-treated UTI, when to call (not fax) the doctor, the difficult discharge.

DLG Education, training modules, with CEUs (in process) address the knowledge and skill set needed to care for elders and those with dementia.
